We often see reports of intelligent children who prove to be smarter and more intelligent than other children of their age. Anil Sharma's Genius tries to tell the story of not just one, but two such talents and what happens when they come face to face. So has Genius become as entertaining and exciting as some of Anil Sharma's previous entertainers? Or does it prove frustrating? Let's analyze.
Genius movie story
Genius is the story of two brilliant minds. Vasudev Shastri (Utkarsh Sharma) is an orphan from Mathura. His brain works faster than a computer. He knows not only his Sanskrit shlokas but also his algebraic theorems and scientific formulas by heart. He attends IIT Roorkee where he falls in love with Nandini (Ishita Chauhan). RAW learns about Vasudev and his intelligence and invites him to join the wing even before he completes his course. Nandini, however, does not avenge her love. Vasudev becomes depressed and one day he comes to the rescue of RAW when their servers are hacked. Vasudev gets an offer to join RAW once again and this time he agrees. While investigating a hack and fire at an ammunition warehouse in Ambala, Vasudev learns that the mastermind is the evil and mysterious MRS (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). How Vasudev tries to defeat this fellow genius is the rest of the film.
Genius movie review
Anil Sharma's story is weak and flawed. Anil Sharma, Sunil Sirvaiya and Amjad Ali's script has a loose ending and is scattered everywhere. The idea of having a non-linear narrative in the first half doesn't work. The dialogues by Anil Sharma, Sunil Sirvaiya and Amjad Ali are over the top and didactic. Some of them are complete garbage and it wouldn't be a surprise if a fun list is made on them.
The Anil Sharma directorial is dated and it seems that he is stuck in the 90s, or even the 80s. The way the songs are forced in the story and the way some sequences have been picked up from Hollywood movies like Batman series, it is shocking and reminiscent of the bygone era.
GENIUS has a non-linear narrative and doesn't make sense as to why. In the first 10 minutes, the audience gets an accurate idea of what has happened. One expects the producers to run through these events. But instead they take their sweet time to solve the story. The whole idea of the genius bit has been unnecessarily hammered. Everyone appears in awe of Vasudeva's genius side, constantly praising him for one reason or the other. He is also depicted as someone who plans not only ten, but a thousand steps ahead. It could have been interesting but sadly it sounds ridiculous. It's really shocking how the script got approval in the first place. The first half is long in which the romantic parts are fuzzy. And not just the love story, the saga of revenge also fails to impress.
Utkarsh Sharma has been chosen very wrongly for this role. He is very raw and has a long way to go. He looks like a college kid and hence throughout the movie, it becomes difficult to imagine him as a RAW agent or even an IIT student. He needs to work on his emotions too. Ishita Chauhan also fails to give a good performance. There is only one expression on his face in the opening sequence. Nawazuddin Siddiqui's entry takes place a few minutes before the interval. He saves the film with his best acting. Watch her dance in 'Pyaar De Pyaar Le'! Mithun Chakraborty (Jaishankar Prasad) is decent. Abhimanyu Singh (Praveen Joshi) is devastated. The same goes for KK Raina (Shri Das) and Ayesha Julka (Nandini's mother). Malti Chehar (Rubina Sheikh) and Dev Gill are hardly memorable.
Himesh Reshammiya's music is warm and soulful. It is unfortunate that so many good songs have been used in such a terrible film. 'Tera Fitoor', 'Dil Meri Na Sune' and 'Tujhse Kahan Jung Hoon Main' are melodious. 'Holi Biraj Maa' is very catchy and 'Pyaar Le Pyaar De' is entertaining. Monty Sharma's background score is exhilarating and dramatic.
Najeeb Khan's cinematography is nothing special. Abbas Ali Mughal's action goes a bit overboard at many places but otherwise it is entertaining. Although VFX is very tough. Bijan Das Gupta's production design makes the film very rich. Ashfaq Makrani's editing is haphazard.
